Nebraska Megan's Law

Named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was passed into federal law in 1995. Megans Law requires that each state have a system in place for informing local residents when a sexual offender is located in their community.
Megan was just seven years old when a previously convicted sexual predator that lived accross the street from her family, abducted, rapped, and murdered her. It was decided that had her family or other local residents had known that a repeated sexual offender was living in their community, this assult would have been thwarted. With those thoughts, the U.S. Congress passed the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", also known as Megan's Law, without any protests.
Since the law has been put into effect, Nebraska has strived to protect its supplying the most current information regarding convicted sex offenders and their whereabouts. The legislation has shown that though sex crimes are still a problem in the United States, offenses committed by past offenders are on a downturn.
